About

This website is dedicated to WTF Taekwondo and Hapkido. WTF Taekwondo is the World Taekwondo Federation and Hapkido is Korea’s other martial art.

Taekwondo – Tae-foot; Kwon-fist; Do-wayTaekwondo

Taekwondo means “the way of hand and foot”. It uses powerful hand strikes, blocks, and kicks as a means of self-discipline, physical conditioning, and self-defense.

Tae Kwon Do is the study of poomse (forms – Tae Guek), punching and kicking, and full-contact sparring.

Poomse

Is a series of stances, directions, kicks, blocks, and punches, that mimic an actual fight. During your colour belt testing there is one poomse to be learned for each belt level; eight in all. For a 1st dan black belt you also need to learn Koryo.

Self-defense

Dependent on the club you attend there will be a full spectrum of self-defense that will be taught. The self-defense is usually associated with the skill set of the instructor. I have always taught Hapkido as my self-defense style as I have a black in that martial art. That being said self-defense is usually a series of blocks, strikes, twists, pressure points, and joint locks.

Sparring – Kyorugi – Olympic Style Sparring

Kyorugi is the actual fight between tow competitors using the offensive and defensive skills learned in the practice of Taekwondo. There are two types of Kyorugi – macho kyorugi or arranged sparring and jayu kyorugi or free sparring.

In 2000 Taekwondo became a full medal sport in the Summer Olympic Games.
